Howard Colgan, Donora, Financial Leader 79, Dies.
Howard O. Colgan, a financial leader in Donora for more than a half century, died last night at 10:30 in Monongahela Memorial Hospital. The 79-year-old Colgan had been in failing health in recent months. Mr. Colgan, who made his home at 1253 CCounty Club Road, Monongahela, entered the banking business in 1907 when he joined the old First National Bank of Donora. This institution merged with the Bank of Donra in 1932 to become the Union National Bank and was renamed the Donora office of Mellon National Bank in 1948.
Colgan retired from banking in 1952, at which time he was assistant vice-resident and manager of Mellon's Donora office. However, Mr. Colgan remained active in his real estate business until last year when he began to liquidate his interests. He had founded the real estate company more than a half century ago.
Active in civic affairs, Mr. Colgan was well known throughout the area. He was a past president of the Monongahela Valley Bankers Club; a charter member of the Monongahela Valley County Club, secretary of Donora Lumber Co., member of the Mellon Quarter Century Club and a member of the Pennsylvania Economy League.
Mr. Colgan was very active in Mason organizations. He was past master of Donmora Blue Lodge, F. & A.M. 625, and a New Castle Consistory, and Syria Temple of Pittsburgh. He worshiped at the First Methodist Church of Donora.
He was born in Homestead on April 29, 1886, the son of James Miller Colgan and Amelia Tafel Colgan. Surviving are his wife, Garnett Colvin Colgan; one son, Howard O. Colgan, Jr. of Ridgewood, N. J.; three daughters, Mrs. Lisle (Jean) Zehner Jr. of Fox Chapel, Mrs. Harvey (Ruth) Davis of Miami Springs, Fl., and Mrs. Donald (Louise) Allen Jr. of Media, Pa.; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Friends are being received at the Lawson-Rabe Funeral Home, Donora, after 7 o'clock tonight.
