Mrs. Tafel resided in Homestead for thirteen years and was widely known and highly esteemed. The story of her long useful and busy life is briefly told in the following sketch: Statira Tafel was born in Greensburg, PA., April 9, 1820. Her maiden name was Shannon. When seven years of age, in 1827, she went with her parents to Pittsburg, where most of her life was spend and the history and growth of that city from thaaat early period to the present was perfectly familiar to her. On July 2, 1840, she was united in marriage to Lewis O. Tafel of Pittsburg, whose death occurred Feb. 4, 1886. In 1862 the family moved to Turtle Creek, PA., where they resided until 1883, when, they returned to Pittsburg. After Mr. Tafel's death in 1886, Mrs. Tafel came to Homestead, erected a home and has since resided. Mrs. Tafel was the mother of thirteen children, two of whom died in infancy and the oldest, Henry, was killed in the Battle of Gettysburg. The surviving children are, Mrs. Harvey McKinney, of Turtle Creek, Edward F. and Frank, of Pittsburg, Lewis O. of the Brooklyn Navy Yard, Mrs. C. C. Shugart and Dr. Robert M., of Chicago, Mrs. J. Miller Coolgan, of New Castle, PA., Mrs. John R. Schooley of Donora, Pa., Mrs. Joseph B. Stewart and Mrs. Mattie Fouche of Homestead. There are thirty-six grand children, thirty of whom are living, and six great grand children. Three sisters, Mrs. Mason of Mt. Washington, Mrs. Robert Miller of Turtle Creek, and Mrs. Margaret Skiles of Pittsburgh also survive. Since early life Mrs. Tafel was a faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal church. She was a woman of ceaseless industry. After rearing her large family and the loss of her devoted husband, she ceased her toils and for fifteen years enjoyed a well earned rest, hale and hearty in spite of her years. In her home all found a hearty welcome and she made it a place of cheerfulness to which relatives, friends and neighbors delighted to go. A life of such conspicuous piety and usefulness, filled with kindly deeds and loving ministrations, greatly endeared her to her family and friends, and when at last disease and sickness combined to enfeeble the the vigorous mind and body, she was the object of the slenderest care until she died in great peace to go to her reward. Funeral services will be conducted this evening at her late residence, corner Ninth Avenue and West Street, at 7:30 by her pastor, Rev. W. C. Weaver, and her former pastor, Rev. W. D. Slease. The interment will be private tomorrow at 1 o'clock at the Uniondale Cemetery, Allegheny, PA. Notes: From letter to Ruth (wife of Frank Tafel, Chicago??) written by William Howard Tafel (brother of Edward Irwin Tafel)- Erie, Pa July 8, 1941 My Dear Ruth: Have been wanting to write before this, but am awaiting some relative information from my cousin, Howard O. Colgan of Donora, Pa., whose mother is one of my father's younger sisters and is still hale and hearty. I have written him to ascertain the names of my grandmother Tafel's parents. She was a Shannon and her mother a Logan, and the Logans gave their name to Logans Ferry, Pa., a small town some 15 miles up the Allegheny River north of Pittsburgh. I have made search of the Pennsylvania roster of men engaged in the Revolution, and five Logans are cited - but, we must ascertain which was our ancestor. When I was about ten years of age, I visited my Aunt Martha Miller, who was sister to my grandmother, Statira Shannon Tafel, and she told me that her mother, who was the Logan girl, has lost three fingers on her right hand when an Indian threw a tomahawk at her as she ran to her cabin and pushed open the door, also , that the Logan family had raised "Bramt" the Indian who was famous in the Revolution. All the research I have done heretofore has been along the Tafel side, and have gotten them back to 1532. One of them I visited in Stuttgart, German, in 1927, is a general in the Germany Army, Max Tafel, and, no doubt will soon be our enemy. I have read much history of Pennsylvania and the Shannon family is repeatedly cited thru daring deeds at Ft. Ligonier, which is about 40 miles east of Pgh (Pittsburgh), but, apparently they came to this country after the War. However, I'll know more of that when I hear form Donora. Marie and I continue in the best of health - and Marie has the same ???? pins with which she won the prize on the Carmania returning from Paris in 1927. I gained 37 pounds during my sojourn in the Adirondack Mts., and am retaining at weight 164 Pounds. Your cousin, Mrs. Jack Weil, my brother Irv's youngest daughter Mollie - paid us a short visit ???? end - Jack comes to Erie for the fishing. All in Pgh (Pittsburgh) are well and Beatrice is set for a trip to Calif. Also, you cousin, Lucille Madden was married at Pgh (Pittsburgh), June 15th, and a letter yesterday advised to the effect that the new groom, Neil Lantry, had been examined for the draft. You mentioned that dry climate of Texas. I can vouch for that as Marie and I spent 17 months at Ft. McIntosh, Laredo, Texas in 1917-1918, and liked it immensely. Affectionately - Marie & Bill. | Shannon, Statira (I1609)

Tafel Arizona, The Youngest State, 1913 Dr. Robert M. Tafel who since 1904 has been numbered among the medical practioners in Phoenix, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on the 27th of July 1858. His parents were Louis D. and Statira (Shannon) Tafel. The father, who was born in Germany followed the profession of bookkeeping as a life work. The mother, a native of Pennsylvania was of Dutch descent, her ancestors having come to this country in 1710. Dr. Tafel was a high school student in Pittsburgh and afterward attended the Pittsburgh Pharmaceutical College. The knowledge there gained has been of inestimable value to him in the discharge of his professional duties. He took up the study of medicine in the Miami Medical College at Cincinnati, Ohio and in 1895 was graduated from the Bennett Medical College of Chicago. He then located for practice in that city, where he remained until 1904--the year of his arrival in Phoenix. Here he has since continued and in the intervening period of twelve years has made continuous progress, the steps in his orderly progression being easily discernible. His professional duties are constantly making greater and greater demand upon his time and energies and he gives undivided allegiance to his profession, recognizing the grave responsibilities which devolve upon the physician in his effort to check the ravages of disease, restore health and prolong life. In 1898 Dr. Tafel was married to Miss Elizabeth Bast, a native of Pittsburgh and of German lineage. They had two children, now deceased. | Tafel, Dr. Robert Milton (I1650)

"FORCED TO TAKE DRUGS" - Wife Says Doctor Compelled Her to Take Morphine. Twice Made Fiend and Twice Fured, She Testifies in New York Court - Declares Husband Induced Her Not to Tell Callers on Telephone That She Was Married to Him. New York Nov. 5 - Mrs. Rita Tafel's story of how her husband, a properous Brooklyn physician, forced her to become a victim of the morphone habit by giving her injections of the drug against her will, won her a decree of separation and $12 a week alimony in Justice Blanchard's part of the supreme court today. Forcing of the drug upon her, Mrs. Tafel testified, was but one of a number of cruelties practiced by her husand, Dr. Charles F. Tafel. Young, pretty, and stylishly clad, Mrs. Tafel talked unhesitatingly on the witness stand. "Last fall," she testified, "the doctor came home late and we quarreled. He bared my arm and tried to inject morphoine into it. I screamed, but, he put a pillow over my mouth and forced me to submit. Finally I became addicted to the use of the drug rather tthan quarrel constantly with my husband. When I refused to take morpohine my husband would beat me into submission. I finally fled to the home of my mother, and got rid of the habit, only to fall again into its grip when I returned to live witith my husband. After I went back to his home in Brooklyn the doctor refused to allow me to enter the house until I agreed not to say I was his wife when people called up on the telephone. Some woman was calling him up, and I think she believed my husband was an unmarried man." "Did he use the drug himself?" asked William Murphy, her lawer. "yes, he took it in my presence," said Mrs. Tafel. Mrs. Agens Provost, Mrs. Tafel's mother, told of a conversation she had with Dr. Tafel in which the physician said his wife "was not the proper mate" for him. It was not until Mrs. Tafel was treated in Bellevue that she was cured of the morphine habit, her mother said. 1920 Census, T625, Laurens, Otsego County, New York, Roll 1255, ED 197, SH 5A 148/151 Tafel, Charles F. (Dau) F 13 S Indiana PA Sweden Line 92 Story from Ethel Tafel, daughter of Archibald & Christina Sjoberg Tafel: In early 1903 Archibald worked in a butcher shop where one of his duties was to deliver fresh meat to the more affluent citizens of Pittsburg. It was then, while delivering to the Harwood home, that he met his future bride, Christina Josephina Sjoberg. Christina was employed as a housemaid for the Harwoods. Christina was born on September 02, 1884 in Scans Moon, Sundsvall, Sweden. She was one of four children born to Karen Elizabeth Kleberg and Mathius or (Mateas) not sure of the spelling Sjoberg. She was a strong willed independent young women. In 1900 at the age of 16 Christina decided she would travel to America. It was popular opinion among Europeans that America was the land of opportunity, where wealth could be had by anyone willing to brave the Atlantic passage. Christina's parents offered no resistance to her decision but obviously felt they would never see their daugher again, since they went so far as to hold a wake for her. The ship that Christina found passage on was actually bound for Canada rather that the United States. They sailed up the St Lawrence and landed in Montreal. Christina found work there as a chambermaid and stayed until late 1902 when she left for Pittsburg to work for the Harwoods. By 1907 Archibald and Christina had made plans to wed. Christina, however, wished to see her family one last time. It was agreed that Archibald would meet Christina in New York when her ship returned and they would be married there. There was a mix-up in the times and Christina and Archibald missed one another in New York and they returned to Pittsburg on different trains. They were finally married in Pittsburg on October 21, 1907. It was shortly after this that Archibald began to consider going to Panama to work on the canal. Although the planning of the canal had been going on for years prior to this, the actual construction had barely begun in 1907. The engineers had recently made great gains in the areas of sanitation, housing and other facilities such as an employee commissary. Also, the dreaded yellow fever had been banished from the isthus. Most important, from the standpoint of an ambitious young man, were the high wages. In early 1908 Archibald left his young bride in Pittsburg and traveled to Panama. He had managed somehow to secure some training as a boiler maker and was to be employed in that capacity. The engines that Archibald worked with were of the steam variety. Within a relatively short time, Archibald had managed to save enough money and found suitable enough quarters to send for his young wife. They were to spend the best part of four years in Panama, during which time Christina bore her first two children. Ethel Christine Tafel born January 7, 1910, followed by Ruth Edith Tafel on June 20th 1911. One major problem facing the workers on the canal was malaria. Transmitted by the female Anopheles mosquito, it was a virtuall unavoidable disease that had or has no vaccine. All that could be given for the racking fewer was quinine, and frequent relapsed were not uncommon. They left Panama in early 1912. Archibald had malaria by this time and this figured in his decision. Their destination first was California where Archibald's brother Ralph lived. During their stay in Panama Archibald had been sending a regular amount of money to a friend in California to invest for him. Upon theri arrival however, the family was shocked to learn that this "friend" and the money had skipped town. The next move was to Columbus, New Mexico. The area had recently been opened up to homesteaders and he found some land to his liking, about one and a half miles north of town. They were to spend a little over 3 years in the Columbus area. This is where my father Roy Archibald Tafel was born January 10, 1913, During the winter months, when Archibald could not work his homestead, the family often commuted to the surrounding towns of Santa Rita and Silver City. Here Arch could work the silvermines and earn the cash necessary to support his family . The time period that they lived in New Mexico was marked by internal strife and political revolution in bordering, Mexico. This is Ethel's account of what happen in New Mexico on March 9th, 1916. "We were all at home, even Dad. When we went outdoors, the sky to the south was filled with black smoke. Columbus was a coaling stop for the trains and Dad supposed an engine was coaling. Soon we heard the horses and wagon of our neighbors, coing fast. They were bring water barrels to us that day. They spoke to Dad and told him of the rebels killing people and making sport of it. We gathered all the food, blankets and some clothing, loaded the wagon and went to the stone house on the way to Deming. There we found many settlers and families gathered together for safety. We spent several days there, then went back to the desert closer to home where we prepared to camp out until the word came we could get a train out of town. Many families were with us. We slept on the ground thirteen nights, the men standing guard in shifts. No fires or lights were permitted. We could see the fires of Pancho Villa and his band on the mountainside every night. During the day Mother and Dad went home to pack our belongings for our trip to Indiana. I was six years old I was sure glad to get to Indiana and safety. Rita Irene Tafel was born May 26, 1916 in LaPorte Indiana and was Lillian Mae Tafel born October 29, 1918. Death Record: Hillsborough County, FL - Cert. # 24396, Volume 1816.
