Mr. and Mrs. L. O. Tafel returned last evening from Pittsburgh where thry were called to attend the funeral if Mr. Tafel;s father, L. O. Tafel, which took place Saturday from his late residence at No. 4724 Liberty Avenue. Concerning the deceased teh Pittsburgh Penny Press of Feb'y 4th. says; "L. O. Tafel, who had been Jos. Walton & Co's. chief bookkeeper for the past twenty-five years, died suddently at 10 o'clock this morning at his home in Bloomfield. He was 74 years of age, and up until a few days ago, when he was taken with a bad cold, was a fmiliar figure in Walton & Co.'s office, always at his desk. For the past few years he aged rapidly, but he was just as thorough in his business and correct in his accounts as ever, showing that only his physical forces were wasting. He was one of the oldest bookkeepers in Pittsburgh.

From the original notes by Pauline Tafel (1832-1912):
Educated for the Lutheran ministry. Had to leave Germany, having revealed state secrets. During Civil War resided on a farm at Turtle Creek, Pa. Was a bookkeeper for Jos. Walton Coal Co.
