397 | Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945) gehört zu den aufregendsten und anregendsten Gestaltender jüngeren Kirchen- und Zeitgeschichte. Er hat in vielfacher Weise Spuren hinterlassen: als Theologe, Christ und Zeitgenosse. Das große Thema des Theologen Bonhoeffer war die Kirche. Zu einem bewußteren kirchlichen Selbstverständnis hat er maßgeblich beigetragen. Einmal schon als knapp 21jähriger mit seiner Doktorarbeit „Sanctorum Communio. Eine dogmatische Untersuchung zur Soziologie der Kirche", und zuletzt nochmals durch seine Gefängnisbriefe („Widerstand und Ergebung"), in denen er von einer „Kirche für andere" spricht, wie auch Jesus „der Mensch für andere" war. Die gläubige Existenz Bonhoeffers hatte ihre Wurzeln im Gedanken der Nachfolge aus dem Geist der Bergpredigt. Daraus entsprang seine pazifistische Einstellung, wie auch seine Entscheidung zum Widerstand gegen die nationalsozialistische Gewaltherrschaft, in dem er sich zunächst innerhalb der Bekennenden Kirche und später in der konspirativen Tätigkeit für die Gruppe um Admiral Canaris engagierte. Eine so facettenreiche Persönlichkeit wie Dietrich Bonhoeffer verleitet dazu, ihre einzelnen Aspekte und Züge zu isolieren und gegeneinander auszuspielen. Während die einen nur den Theologen in ihm sehen, wollen die anderen ausschließlich den „spirituellen Bonhoeffer", den Verfasser der „Nachfolge" und von „Gemeinsames Leben", wahrhaben.
